If you remember a couple weeks ago I had a post on how I’ve been trying to be more practical. I enjoyed hearing how each of you are trying to be more practical these days. As I mentioned, one of the things I’ve been doing is making my own bread. I’ve had a bread maker for awhile but I hardly ever used it. Then one day it hit me that it would be so much more practical and cost-effective to just make my own. So I looked through my cookbooks and found a recipe. This came from my Better Home and Gardens cook book:
For a 2 lb loaf:
- 1 1/3 c milk
- 1/4 c water
- 2 Tbs. honey or sugar
- 4 tsp butter or margarine
- 2 c whole wheat flour
- 2 c bread flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast or bread machine yeast
Put the ingredients in the machine in the order listed. Select the whole wheat setting and then choose your bread color. I usually use the light setting. I found that it made the bread fluffier and not so dense. We prefer it that way.
This recipe is delicious! And the only things extra I had to buy that I don’t normally keep around are the flours and the yeast. But each of those last for quite a few loaves.
So do you have a what bread recipe you love? I would love to hear it and try it!
