Bed Canopy {tutorial}

I think by now you know that my daughter is a princess. Sure, she likes to get dirty, but she is still a princess at heart. We’ve been slowly adding the finishing touches to her room and I’m so excited to reveal it to you on Thursday! But before we get to that point I thought I’d give you a little preview in the form of a tutorial of the awesome canopy she has over her bed!

how to make a bed canopy with tulle and hula hoop

This canopy was seriously easy to make and cost hardly anything: my kind of project!

Supplies Needed:

  • Hula Hoop
  • 10 yds tulle
  • Roll of tulle
  • Wide mouth jar band
  • Fishing line
  • Hot Glue
  • Hook

Step 1: Wrap your hula hoop with the roll of tulle. I was ok with a tint of the green showing through the tulle since that’s one of the colors in my daughter’s room, but you can make it thick enough to cover the hula hoop completely.

Step 2: Cut 5 pieces of fishing line. Cut them to the length of how far you want your hula hoop from your ceiling. Does that make sense? Tie one end of each piece to the wide mouth lid band. Make sure to leave enough at the top to attach it to your hook.

Step 3: Tie the other end to the hula hoop. Make sure to keep the lines as even as possible so the hula hoop lies flat. Make sure the 5 lines are evenly spaced on both the band and the hula hoop as well. You can hot glue the line in place on the band if this would help.

Step 4: Cut your 10 yards of tulle into four equal lengths. With one length, hot glue one corner of the short side to the band. Glue the other corner a quarter of the way around the band. Find the middle and glue that to the band in between the two corners. Then just scrunch the tulle a lot and glue into place on the quarter of the band. Repeat with the next section on the next quarter of the band, overlapping the two just a little. Repeat until all four sections have been glued on.

Step 5: You could leave the tulle as is, but I didn’t really like that I could see the glue through the tulle. So I added a piece of ribbon around the scrunched up tulle to mask the glue.

Step 6: Tie the short ends of the fishing line together at the top. Put some hot glue on the knot to hold them together. Try to keep them even as this is what will hang on the hook.

Step 7: Follow the package instructions for attaching the hook to the ceiling. Hang the canopy by the glued knot.

So what do you think?

My daughter absolutely loves it, as you can see. She even closes the tulle around her before she goes to bed. What a little princess :).

Make sure to check back on Thursday for the full reveal!
